How to Get a Hungarian Tax Number (Adószám)

The adószám is the single most important number your business will have in Hungary. Here's what it is and how to get one.

What exactly is the adószám?

It's your unique Hungarian tax identification number, issued by the Hungarian Tax Authority (NAV). It identifies your business in every tax filing, invoice, and official interaction going forward.

How to get one

  1. Register your business (sole proprietorship, Kft., or Bt.) through the appropriate channel.
  2. NAV automatically issues an adószám as part of the registration process for most structures.
  3. You'll receive official confirmation, usually within a few business days.
Note: for a Kft., the tax number is typically issued once the Court of Registration processes your company formation — so timing can depend on how quickly your founding documents are filed.

What you need it for

  • Issuing any invoice
  • Opening a business bank account
  • Filing VAT, income, or corporate tax returns
  • Signing most business contracts

Common issues foreign founders run into

Delays often happen when documentation is incomplete, or when a foreign founder's identification documents need additional verification. Having everything prepared in advance — and ideally translated where needed — speeds things up significantly.
