Starting a Business

Everything you need to launch in Hungary

From choosing a structure to getting your first tax number — here's what actually happens, step by step.

01 · Choose a structure

Sole proprietorship, Kft., or Bt.?

Most solo founders start as a sole proprietorship (egyéni vállalkozás) — fast and cheap, but with full personal liability. If you want liability protection or plan to grow, a Kft. (limited company) is the standard choice.

  • Sole proprietorship: can be set up in a day, online
  • Kft.: requires minimum share capital and a notary/lawyer
02 · Register & get your tax number

The adószám is your key to doing business

Once registered, the Hungarian Tax Authority (NAV) issues your tax number (adószám) — you'll need it for every invoice, contract, and filing from that point on.

  • Usually issued within a few business days
  • You'll also need a Hungarian business bank account
03 · Start operating

Invoicing, filings, and staying compliant

From your first invoice onward, Hungary requires real-time electronic invoice reporting to NAV, plus regular VAT and income tax filings depending on your structure.

  • Use invoicing software that reports to NAV automatically
  • Check our tax calendar so no deadline surprises you
